Plug-in solar, the kind you stand on a balcony or in a garden and plug into a 13A socket, becomes fully legal to buy and self-install in the UK on 27 August 2026. The government made SI 2026/848 on 16 July 2026, finishing the job the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero started with its March announcement, and capping output at 800W per kit.
That is a genuine step forward for renters and flat owners who had no legitimate solar option before, and UKEM now supplies certified plug-in solar panels built for exactly those homes. What’s legal now
Until 2026, plug-in solar sat in a regulatory grey area. BS 7671, the UK wiring regulations, treated any source of generation behind the consumer unit as a fixed installation, and the plugs-and-sockets safety regulations stopped kits being sold for their intended purpose. The change came in two steps: an Amendment 4 carve-out in April 2026 that allowed certified kits fitted by an electrician, and then SI 2026/848, made on 16 July 2026 and in force from 27 August 2026, which makes compliant kits a true plug-and-play consumer product.
The final rules are specific:
- 800W output cap. The microinverter can feed at most 800VA (about 3.5A) into your home.
- Panel capacity up to 2,000W, across a maximum of four panels, with no more than two in series. Oversized panels don’t raise the grid feed; they help the inverter hold its 800W for more of the day.
- Self-install is allowed. No electrician is required in the standard case.
- Direct socket connection only. The kit must plug into a suitable socket circuit; extension leads and adaptors are prohibited.
- Whole-kit certification. Panels, inverter, cables, plug, and mounting must comply as one certified package. A UKCA mark on the inverter alone is not enough.
- Batteries are excluded. The framework covers generation only.
One compliance step survives, and it is non-negotiable: DNO notification under G98. You must notify your Distribution Network Operator (DNO) before the kit exports to the grid. That is a quick online form, not an approval gate, but skipping it leaves you non-compliant.

Who plug-in solar actually suits
The policy is aimed at households that could not install rooftop solar at all:
- Renters in flats or houses, where the landlord owns the roof.
- Leaseholders in blocks where roof access is communal property.
- Owners with shaded, north-facing, or structurally unsuitable roofs.
DESNZ paired the legalisation with a £25m pilot announced on 21 April 2026 to put plug-in kits into low-income households. Germany, where plug-in has been legal for years, registered over 1.1 million installs by mid-2025. Most UK homeowners who search for “plug-in solar” have a usable roof, and for them the maths still points firmly at panels on the roof with, in most cases, a battery to use that power after dark.
A typical plug-in kit generates 500-800 kWh a year in a good spot. A 4 kWp rooftop array on the same property produces 3,400-4,200 kWh. That is the difference between trimming your standby load and covering a meaningful share of household consumption, including evening use if you add storage.

Plug-in also hits hard ceilings that rooftop does not:
- No battery path. The plug-in framework explicitly excludes storage. Rooftop pairs cleanly with Fox ESS or Tesla Powerwall 3 storage.
- No SEG in practice. Paid export needs an MCS-certified install and an export meter. Plug-in kits don’t qualify, so surplus generation has no value.
- Shorter lifespan. Plug-in hardware warranties run around 10 years. The rooftop panels we fit carry warranties of 25 years or more.
- Orientation limits. A balcony panel only sees sun from one aspect. A roof array can split across south, east, and west to match when your home actually uses power.

What to check before buying plug-in
Only relevant if rooftop genuinely isn’t an option for you. Start with compliance; it applies to every plug-in kit, regardless of brand:
- Whole-kit certification. Only kits certified as a complete package to the UK specification are legal from 27 August 2026. An inverter-only UKCA mark is not compliance.
- DNO notification (G98). Notify your Distribution Network Operator before you connect. Mandatory, quick, and easy to overlook if you bought the kit online.
- Tenancy and freeholder consent. Balcony installs can fall foul of lease clauses about external alterations. Ask in writing.
- Socket and wiring. The kit must plug straight into a suitable socket on a healthy circuit. Extension leads and adaptors are prohibited; if your wiring’s condition is unclear, get it checked first.
- Realistic expectations. Roughly £150-£250 of grid electricity offset a year. A real saving for a flat, not a whole-home solution.
