Tyneside roofs

Solar that fits a terrace, a semi or a Tyneside flat

Much of Newcastle and Gateshead is terraced streets and inter-war semis. Both take solar well, but a terrace roof is smaller, so the layout matters more.

Our designers plan the panels around chimneys, dormers and roof windows so you use every useful metre of roof.

  • Panels laid out around what is already on your roof
  • All-black panels for a neat finish on slate or tile
  • A battery option if you are out during the day

A quick roof check for Tyneside homes

  • Is the roof in good repair? Panels stay up for decades, so fix slipped tiles first.
  • Do you live in an upstairs or downstairs Tyneside flat? Get written agreement from whoever shares the roof.
  • Is your home listed, or in a conservation area such as parts of Jesmond or Gosforth? Ask the council before you book.
  • Do you know roughly how much electricity you use a year? Your bill or supplier app shows it.

Common questions

Solar on Tyneside: your questions answered

Do you install solar panels in Newcastle and Gateshead?

Yes. We fit solar across Newcastle, Gateshead and North Tyneside, including Chopwell, Killingworth, Blaydon and Wideopen. Our head office is at 6 Crown Road, Quay West Business Village, Sunderland, and every install is MCS certified.

Is there enough sun in Newcastle for solar panels?

Yes. UK solar systems produce around 850 to 1,100 kWh per kWp a year, depending on location and roof direction, and North East homes sit within that range. Panels work on daylight, not heat. Your online estimate is based on your own roof.

Do I need planning permission for solar panels in Newcastle?

Usually not. Roof-mounted solar on a house is normally allowed without a planning application. Listed buildings need consent, and conservation areas can carry extra limits, so check with your council first if either applies to you.

Can I get solar panels on a Tyneside flat?

Often, yes, but sort out the roof first. You need to own the roof or have written agreement from whoever does, which usually means the other flat or the freeholder. Once that is in place the install is the same as on any terrace.
